MarketMuse Alternatives (Free and Paid): 8 Tools Priced for 2026

Oct 6, 20266 min read
Illustration for a MarketMuse alternatives guide: robots holding price tags and a calculator beside a table comparing 8 SEO tools, led by SaagaSolve.

We priced and compared eight MarketMuse alternatives against the jobs its users actually pay for: content briefs, topic planning, content scoring, and getting the finished page published. Every price below was pulled on October 1, 2026.

The top pick is SaagaSolve. MarketMuse does one job well: it plans what you should write. Your team's real jobs run past planning. They include writing, humanizing, publishing, reporting, paid and sales. SaagaSolve is the only tool here that covers that whole loop. It also shows its price range, $0 to $129/mo, with no demo call.

Why teams leave MarketMuse

1. You can't see the price. Every paid tier on MarketMuse's pricing page ends in "Book a demo." No numbers appear anywhere. The caps are visible, though.

  • Optimize: 5 Content Briefs a month.
  • Research: 10 briefs a month.
  • Strategy: 20 briefs a month.

Even the top published tier stops at 20. Third-party figures exist. Capterra reports Optimize at $99, Research at $249 and Strategy at $499 a month. Those figures are Capterra-reported, not vendor-published. One Capterra reviewer says serious use "will cost you a minimum of $150/month" (Joshua V., Email Copywriter, Capterra, 12/21/2021).

2. It plans and then stops. MarketMuse builds a site-wide Inventory. It scores Personalized Difficulty and Topic Authority, and it issues Strategy Documents. Almost nothing else on this list does that. What it doesn't do is publish. It doesn't write finished drafts at scale or humanize them. It doesn't run paid or sales workflows, and it doesn't act on its own recommendations. It's a planning engine, not an execution engine. Reviewers hit the friction too. One wrote "I've been using MarketMuse for over a year and I still don't really understand how some things are supposed to work" (Anonymous User, Internet Marketing Specialist, Capterra, 5/15/2022).

1. SaagaSolve: Best for planning and executing in one platform

Pricing (saagasolve.com/pricing, October 2026):

  • Free: $0, plus a one-time $5 LLM credit.
  • Starter: $20/mo, plus $10/mo in credit.
  • Pro: $129/mo, plus $64.50/mo in credit.
  • Annual billing saves up to 15%.
  • Full tiers are on the pricing page.

Rating: 4.9/5 from 67 reviews.

SaagaSolve is a suite of 15 tools across 3 phases. It has 63 native integrations and 150+ LLM models live (315 in the catalog). It does the planning work MarketMuse sells and then keeps going.

Content gaps. The content gap analyzer is SaagaSolve's closest counterpart to MarketMuse's Inventory work. It shows where competitors cover topics you don't.

Keyword research. The keyword research tool feeds topic selection. Agents then act on the output instead of handing you a spreadsheet.

Site health. The site health checker audits the pages you already have. This is where the case study below comes from.

More than a swap. MarketMuse gives you data and scores. SaagaSolve gives you data plus the agents that act on it: writing, humanizing, publishing, reporting, paid and sales. You're replacing the hand-off between five tools.

Native data. Ahrefs is one of SaagaSolve's 63 native integrations, connected via direct API. It's already in the platform, not something you bring yourself. The same goes for Semrush, Google Search Console, GA4, DataForSEO and WordPress. Those six are the integrations named publicly.

The stack math. Pair Clearscope Essentials ($129/mo) with Frase Starter ($39/mo billed yearly). That's $168/mo for a grader and an execution agent, and still no site-wide planning layer. SaagaSolve Pro is $129/mo. Starter is $20/mo.

How the suite is built. Planning, creation and distribution run as connected phases. An agent can pull the gap, draft the page, humanize it, publish it and report on it. You approve at the points you choose.

Proof.

  • "It's already saving us AU$120K per year." Steven, CEO & Founder, Opollo.
  • "Most SEO tools force you into their workflow. With SAAGA Solve you can build custom agent workflows for anything you can imagine. It's saving us AT LEAST 15 hours per week." Laura Cardona, Director of SEO, Dymic Digital.
  • In the audit case study, a manual audit took 16 hours at about $2,400. The agent run took 8 minutes plus a 1-hour review at about $170. That saved $2,230 and ran roughly 93% faster.

Pros:

  1. A real free tier, not a stripped trial.
  2. A $20/mo entry point, below every paid competitor here except NeuronWriter's annual Bronze plan.
  3. Visible pricing at every tier.
  4. Planning and execution in one loop.
  5. 63 native integrations with no separate subscriptions.

Cons: SaagaSolve is the new kid on the block. MarketMuse has years of market trust, and trust like that takes time. Our review base reflects it: 4.9/5 from 67 reviews. The rating is high. The sample is small.

Who it's for: SEO leads and content teams who want planning and the write-humanize-publish-report loop on one platform. Start free or book a tutorial.

2. Surfer SEO: Best for optimizing one document against a live SERP

Pricing (surferseo.com/pricing, October 1, 2026; all billed yearly):

  • Discovery: $49/mo (120 documents).
  • Standard: $99/mo (360 documents).
  • Pro: $182/mo.
  • Peace of Mind: $299/mo.
  • AI Search Analytics add-on: $82/mo.
  • Enterprise: custom.
  • Every plan has a 7-day trial. There is no free plan.

Rating: G2 4.8/5 from 546 reviews.

Pros:

  1. Real-time Content Editor guidelines.
  2. Topical Map.
  3. Cannibalization reports.
  4. AI Tracker across ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews and Perplexity.
"I like how the Content Editor provides clear, practical recommendations as I write." Kristina M., Marketing and SEO specialist, G2, 7/31/2026.

Gap vs. MarketMuse: Surfer optimizes the page in front of you. It has no site-wide Inventory, Personalized Difficulty, Topic Authority or strategy documents. MarketMuse's Topic Navigator doesn't match its AI-visibility tracking.

Cons: Its own reviewers complain about price: "The pricing feels steep, especially for smaller teams or freelancers" (Kiara B., Product, G2, 5/21/2025). Lower tiers cap documents.

Who it's for: In-house content teams and agencies who live in the Content Editor.

3. Frase: Best for an agent that runs research through publishing

Pricing (frase.io/pricing, October 1, 2026):

  • Starter: $39/mo billed yearly, $49 monthly (10 articles).
  • Professional: $103/mo billed yearly, $129 monthly (40 articles).
  • Scale: $239/mo billed yearly, $299 monthly (100 articles).
  • Enterprise: custom.
  • No free plan. The 7-day trial is capped at 5 articles and 50 audit pages.

Rating: G2 4.8/5 from 311 reviews.

Pros:

  1. Publishes to WordPress, Webflow, Sanity and Wix.
  2. FraseCMS hosting is free to 100,000 page views a month.
  3. Content Guard watches 10–300 pages for rank decay and drafts fixes.
  4. MCP server and CLI on every plan.
"The Blog creation feature is incredible. I also enjoy the Audit and 'Fix Pack' it creates." Chet S., Physician, medical educator, G2, 6/12/2026.

Gap vs. MarketMuse: Frase executes. But its audit is page-level, with no Inventory, Personalized Difficulty or Topic Authority. It leaves the portfolio planning layer to MarketMuse.

Cons: There is no free plan, and articles are capped per tier. One reviewer reports: "Many of the most powerful features are locked behind an SEO add-on that costs extra" (Emmanuel B., Product Manager, G2, 5/7/2026).

Who it's for: Teams that want one agent running research, draft, publish and decay repair with approval gates.

4. Clearscope: Best for the cleanest content grader

Pricing (clearscope.io/pricing, October 1, 2026):

  • Essentials: $129/mo (50 tracked queries, 20 drafts).
  • Business: $399/mo (300 tracked queries).
  • Enterprise: custom.
  • Unlimited users on every plan.
  • 14-day trial. No free plan.

Rating: G2 4.9/5 from 92 reviews. 4.9/5 from 60 on Capterra.

Pros:

  1. The highest combined review floor on this list.
  2. Unlimited users and projects.
  3. A–F content grades, plus query fan-out tracking across ChatGPT and Gemini.
  4. Google Docs and Word add-ins.
"It easily brought down the time it took us to create briefs by 70-80%." Ashitha J., Content Marketing Manager, G2, 1/24/2023.

Gap vs. MarketMuse: Clearscope works as one keyword, one report, one grade. It has no site Inventory, Personalized Difficulty or Topic Authority. MarketMuse's own pricing page points to patented topic modeling (US patent 10,409,875) as its edge.

Cons: The $129 entry price is the highest starting price in this table. A reviewer notes: "For smaller teams or occasional users, the cost feels a bit high" (Vishal K., Tech SEO Lead, G2, 1/16/2026). Another reviewer found Clearscope's keyword suggestions less optimal than MarketMuse's (Nelaka F., Manager, G2, 3/27/2024).

Who it's for: Editorial teams who want the best grader and will pay $129+ for it.

5. NeuronWriter: Best for budget NLP optimization

Pricing (neuronwriter.com/pricing, October 1, 2026; monthly / yearly):

  • Bronze: $23 / $19 per month (2 projects).
  • Silver: $45 / $37.
  • Gold: $69 / $57 (adds GSC/WP/Shopify integrations and API).
  • Platinum: $93 / $77.
  • Diamond: $117 / $97.
  • AI Monitoring add-on from $9/mo.
  • 7-day trial and a 30-day refund on your first plan. No free plan.

Rating: G2 4.4/5 from 31 reviews. 4.9/5 from 17 on Capterra.

Pros:

  1. The cheapest full ladder here.
  2. AI Monitoring for AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity.
  3. API access from Gold.
"I really like how it takes the guesswork out of writing content that can actually compete in search results." Mark D., Business Consultant, G2, 8/11/2025.

Gap vs. MarketMuse: NeuronWriter optimizes per query. It has no Inventory, Personalized Difficulty, Topic Authority or strategy documents. It's the budget end of the per-page spectrum, the opposite trade-off from MarketMuse's portfolio planning.

Cons: Bronze caps you at 2 projects. "The AI credits can be spent pretty quick" (Don C., Co-Founder, G2, 3/24/2024). With 31 G2 reviews, its base is one of the smallest on this list.

Who it's for: Solo SEOs and small agencies optimizing many low-stakes pages.

6. Scalenut: Best for AI-search (GEO) content at volume

Pricing (scalenut.com/pricing, October 1, 2026):

  • Starter: $59/mo monthly, or $24/mo annual.
  • Plus: $89/mo monthly, or $36/mo annual.
  • Professional: $199/mo monthly, or $80/mo annual.
  • VIP Service: custom.

The $24, $36 and $80 annual rates are promotional ("60% OFF Limited Offer"). The standard monthly prices are $59, $89 and $199. There is a 7-day trial and no free plan.

Rating: G2 shows 4.7/5 from 315 reviews.

Pros:

  1. AI-visibility tracking (ChatGPT and Google AIO on all plans, Perplexity on Professional).
  2. Auto-publish to WordPress and Shopify.
  3. Up to 150 articles a month on Professional at the promotional annual rate, and 75 at the standard monthly price.
"What I can accomplish within Scalenut replaces at least two (maybe 3) tools I used to use." Jason S., Founder and CEO (vendor-site testimonial on scalenut.com/pricing).

Gap vs. MarketMuse: Scalenut executes AI-search content. It builds no site Inventory and computes no Personalized Difficulty or Topic Authority.

Cons: The headline prices are promotional. AI-visibility data refreshes weekly, not daily. Its social proof leans on vendor-site testimonials.

Who it's for: Budget-conscious GEO teams with the editing capacity to polish high article volume.

7. Outranking: Best for brief-to-draft automation

Pricing: Not public. outranking.io/pricing resolves to the homepage on October 1, 2026. Every call to action reads "Get Started" or "Book a Demo." Pricing is sales-gated.

Rating: We couldn't verify a current rating. Its review footprint is thin and dominated by vendor-site testimonials.

Pros:

  1. Briefs, first drafts, auto-optimization and internal linking in one workflow.
  2. Keyword clustering up to 100,000 keywords.
  3. WordPress plugin and Google Docs export.
"Since implementing Outranking for AI SEO writing and on-page optimization, we at Clickworker have been able to increase the number of clicks on our blog by an astonishing 1000%." Robert Koch, SEO Manager, Clickworker.com (vendor-site testimonial on outranking.io).

Gap vs. MarketMuse: Outranking writes and optimizes. It has no Inventory-style portfolio intelligence, no Personalized Difficulty and no patented topic model. It's execution with strategy bolted on.

Cons: You hit the same demo gate you were trying to leave. Its testimonials are vendor-curated.

Who it's for: SEO agencies that want brief-to-draft automation and will sit through a demo to get a price.

8. Topic (by Chia Labs): Best for low-cost per-article briefs

Pricing (usetopic.com/pricing, October 1, 2026; monthly / annual):

  • Starter: $99 / $80 per month (10 briefs).
  • Plus: $199 / $160 (25 briefs).
  • Premium: $299 / $240 (50 briefs).
  • Enterprise: contact sales.
  • The trial is 3 briefs for $7 over 7 days. There is no free plan.

Rating: G2 5.0/5 from 37 reviews. Capterra 5.0/5 from 20 reviews.

Pros:

  1. Briefs from about $10 each at list price.
  2. One-month brief rollover.
  3. Unlimited writer sharing without using seats.
  4. Google Docs and WordPress plugins.
"Using Topic helped us bring our research time down from hours to minutes." Bimal Kartheek R., Cofounder, Capterra, 3/28/2020.

Two Topic reviewers say they switched from MarketMuse. One wrote: "MarketMuse is too expensive. Topic offers much better pricing and features" (Verified Reviewer, Director of Demand Generation, Capterra, 7/7/2020).

Gap vs. MarketMuse: Topic does per-article briefs. It has no Inventory, Personalized Difficulty, Topic Authority or strategy documents. It's a lighter, cheaper brief machine.

Cons: The 10–50 brief caps mirror the cap structure people leave MarketMuse over. Reviews are tiny and mostly from 2019–2021. The pricing page still shows a 2021 copyright, so the product looks unmaintained.

Who it's for: Small teams and freelancers who want MarketMuse-style briefs at a fraction of the price.

Is there a truly free MarketMuse alternative?

Only two tools on this list have a real $0 plan.

  • MarketMuse Free: 1 user, 10 queries a month, no Content Briefs, no tracked topics and no site inventory. You can browse, but you can't generate a single brief.
  • SaagaSolve Free: $0 plus a one-time $5 LLM credit. It's the full platform entry, so agents run on day one.
  • Everyone else: a trial. Surfer, Frase, NeuronWriter and Scalenut give 7 days. Clearscope gives 14. Topic charges $7. Outranking requires a demo.

The free path that works is SaagaSolve's.

How to choose

  • If you need per-document optimization and AI-search tracking, choose Surfer, from $49/mo billed yearly.
  • If you need an agent that drafts, publishes and repairs decay, choose Frase, from $39/mo billed yearly.
  • If you need the cleanest grader and have budget, choose Clearscope, from $129/mo.
  • If you need the lowest price for NLP optimization, choose NeuronWriter, from $19/mo billed yearly.
  • If you need GEO content at volume, choose Scalenut. Plan on the standard $59/mo, not the $24 promotional rate.
  • If you need brief-to-draft automation and will take a demo, choose Outranking.
  • If you need cheap per-article briefs, choose Topic, from $80/mo billed annually.
  • If you need portfolio-level planning (Inventory, Personalized Difficulty, Topic Authority) and will book a demo, stay on MarketMuse.
  • If you need planning and the agents that write, humanize, publish and report, choose SaagaSolve, from $0.

Replace the hand-off, not just the brief tool

MarketMuse tells you what to write. SaagaSolve plans it, writes it, humanizes it, publishes it and reports on it. Pricing runs $0 free, $20/mo Starter and $129/mo Pro. The audit case study cut a $2,400 job to about $170. Compare that with a $168/mo grader-plus-agent pairing that still lacks a planning layer.
